Research of Cybersecurity Book Consumption

Cyberkid Vietnam - Professional - Lead Researcher

CyberKid Vietnam has planned to produce a book on cyber safety for kids and parents as one of the educational items we have planned to make that enhance youngsters' knowledge of cyberthreats. With this approach, we need to understand how parents and kids choose and use nonfiction books and soft skills.

Parents

  1. Methodology: Quantitative research (Digital and Paper surveys)
  2. Participants: Parents whose children are between the ages of 5-16 years old. Quantity: 459
  3. Research problems:To gain knowledge of the customs, requirements, and other elements influencing parents' book purchases for their kids as well as their desire to acquire books to teach their kids skills online.
  4. Research content:
  • How do parents enjoy reading book?
  • What kind of books do parents like to read?
  • How do they usually buy books?
  • Do they often buy books for their children?
  • What kind of books do parents usually buy for their children?
  • Do they find topic of Internet safety important?
  • Do they find it necessary to buy this type of book for children?
  • Have they ever read/purchased a book about knowledge/skills to protect themselves online?
  • What factors do they consider when buying books for their child?
  • How much are they willing to pay to buy books on soft skills/extra-curricular knowledge for children?
  1. Research results:
  • Only a quarter of parents answered that they regularly read books, while those who rarely read books account for 28%.
  • Nearly 60% of parents often read paper books, about 40% of parents read books online.
  • 60% of parents buy books from bookstores, 36% buy online.
  • Half of the parents usually buy books for their children (50%), about 33% of parents buy them occasionally, and the rest rarely or do not buy books for their children.
  • For parents, all three types of books (textbook, reference book, entertainment book) are equally important, because they are closely related to the development of children.
  • 82% of parents think that cyber security is a big concern, 77% of parents find it necessary to buy books on this issue. But only 16% of parents have bought books teaching cyber safety skills for their children, the remaining 84% have not bought books on this issue.
  • Half of the parents who participated in the survey were most interested in the content factor when buying books, the second most important factor was the form (21%).
  • Parents and children prioritize the same two factors when buying books.
  • Almost all parents are willing to spend over 50,000 when buying books about extracurricular skills/knowledge for their children (>90%).
Parents are very concerned about the issue of protecting their children on cyberspace, and find it necessary to buy books on this issue. However the books about online self-defense skills are lacked in the market and not attractive enough.

Children

  • About 90% of children have not purchased books about online self-defense skills.Only 63% of children think that buying books about cyber security is necessary.
  • Children's considerations when choosing books are: Top priority is the content, next is the form (eye-catching factor), then the price and review.

Children are aware of safety issues in cyberspace, but market for book about cybersecurity is narrow and not attractive books.

Findings and Takeaways

Although growing awareness trends and Internet safety concerns affect both parents and children, they are not the subjects that most pique their attention when they shop for books. As a result, it is unlikely that this product will serve as a useful tool for parents and kids to acquire information in this area.
